This is a new sea turtle pewter charm. It is made in the USA from Safepewter which is a lead free metal. The Hawksbill's beautiful and distinctive shell is contributing to its downfall. In addition to dwindling breeding grounds, the resurgence of use of turtle shell for combs, eyeglasses, ornamental items and curios has led to their endangered status. Hawksbill turtles use their powerful "beak" to open crabs and shellfish. They are relatively slow swimmers and tend to stay in the same area. Years ago the use of plastics appeared to have saved the Hawksbill, but unfortunately their shell has once again become popular. Makes a great gift for yourself or a loved one.
